Specimen:

Isolate from blood, urine, sterile body fluid cultures, environmental, food, other.

Collection Method:

Isolate provided on culture medium for Listeria spp.

Specimen Processing, Storage and Shipping:

Send as growth on appropriate culture medium or in appropriate transport medium.  Clinical specimens should be sent using proper shipping conditions for the type of specimen.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods:

Shipping of specimens shall be done by a TDG certified individual in accordance with TDG regulations. For additional information regarding classification of specimens for the purposes of shipping, consult either Part 2 Appendix 3 of the TDG Regulations or section 3.6.2 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations as applicable.

Septicemia, meningitis, gastroenteritis, neonatal infections.

Completed Enteric Diseases Program requisition form.

Methods and Interpretation of Results:

Whole Genome MLST analysis (L. monocytogenes only)

Whole Genome SNV analysis (All Listeria species)

Whole genome sequencing data is uploaded to the PulseNet Canada national databases for interpretation according to PulseNet Canada guidelines. Please contact us using the information below for further information on interpretation guidelines.

Testing is performed, in whole or in part, using a “Research Use Only” testing kit which has not been fully validated/verified.

Turnaround Time:

21 calendar days for WGS performed in-house. 5 calendar days for analysis on samples sequenced provincially. Note: Turnaround times for routine isolates may be extended during major foodborne outbreak activities or due to limited availability of resources.
